Philosophy

In the VCCN lab, we’re all about open and collaborative science – both in how we study the brain and how we work together. At the heart of our lab is a commitment to transparency, respect, and teamwork. We believe science moves forward when people feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions, giving feedback, and tackling challenges together. Open communication is not just encouraged - it’s what makes our lab thrive. Diversity, different perspectives, and different life experiences are not only valued, they make our research stronger.

Our Core Values

Transparency

We share our science openly and honestly. In lab meetings, we discuss both successes and setbacks, and we learn from both. We also maintain open and collaborative code repositories and aim to share our tools and results whenever possible. Check out our lab Github.

Constructive feedback

We support one another while also offering thoughtful, respectful critique. Feedback is specific, actionable, and aimed at improving ideas, and we balance it with recognition of what works well.

Flexibility

We recognize that people work differently. We try to accommodate different caregiving responsibilities, life circumstances, and working rhythms, while maintaining responsibility and communication within the team.

Curiosity

Curiosity and learning come first. We value exploration and growth, and we see “failed” experiments as opportunities to learn rather than setbacks.

By fostering a friendly, collaborative, and intellectually curious atmosphere, we aim to build a space where excellent science, and the people doing it, can thrive.
